Why do my peonies have ants?
Ants on peonies are harmless and do not affect the bloom. Peony bud scales possess special structures called extrafloral nectaries that are high in sugar to attract ants. The flowers have evolved to attract ants so they will defend the buds from being eaten by other insects. Once the flower blooms, the nectaries are empty, and the ants leave.
