How do I plant a tree or shrub?

Our planting recommendations apply to all types of plants. Plants that require special planting advice have that information on the plant page on our website. But in general, start by selecting your location based on sun exposure needs of the plant. Then, prepare your soil. Make sure you have added any needed amendments to improve overall soil quality in your garden or container.  Dig a hole twice the diameter of the pot and deep enough that the base of the plant will sit at ground level. Add a bit of slow-release fertilizer if desired to the hole. Fill hole with soil and pat gently in place. Water thoroughly. Make sure the soil stays relatively moist but not soggy as the roots get established over the first few weeks.
